HD ENABLES THE 3D: PRESENTATION OF WOWvx 3D PHILIPS'S TECHNOLOGY
Our company has always taken the lead in finding solutions for 3D displays: it was 1987 when we edited for a famous public
transport company of Milan the first 3D movie, following projects include a short 3D promotional spot created by our staff for the
"SMAU 2000" exhibition.
These spots were the result of our continuous effort to study and research for a 3D display based on the autostereoscopic video
signal.
Until now classic 3D visualization systems have had the nuisance of having the spectator wear the famous polarized glasses, that we
all remember from 3D cinema.
Having considered this, when Philips, more than three years ago, announced its intention to market LCD monitors
capable of displaying 3D images and multimedia contents without the need for external glasses, our company decided to
follow this new business and to offer Philips's 3D solutions as soon as it would become commercially available.
This goal was reached at the beginning of October 2008, when our company became one of the few
certified dealers in Italy
for Philips 3D solutions.
Unlike many of Philips competitors that still have 3D prototype models in a embryonic state, Philips has developed a line of
products for the conversion and creation of 3D content from 2D contributions.
For Philips's complete 3D line-up check out the following pictures:
The diagram explains the principles on which Philips has based its 3D technology, called WOWvx -
by the same company: a WOWvx display integrates a multi-view lenticular system technology. Each pixel is not only the combination
of X and Y position on the display chart but also of a third position (Z) which identifies the location on the perpendicular axis
to the display; this data ensures a 3D depth effect. The 2D - 3D conversion implements this solution, as you can understand from
the following picture:
The 3D WOWvx display interface is based on 2D images with the addition of
information relative to the Z axis (depth).
Alongside the traditional 2D images (to the left in the example above) a Z image, called depth of map, is added
(on the right in the picture above) with the same size and resolution of the 2D image. Each pixel of this depth map corresponds to
a pixel of 2D and it indicates the distance between each pixel and the viewer.
More in detail, Philips's line up is composed of the following displays:
42-3D6W02: 3D lcd Monitor, with the following specifications:
- Size: 42"
- resolution 1920x1080
- true color representation
- intelligent display because it integrates inside the 3D interface and processing
- 3D viewing angle: about 120°
- 3D visualization distance: from 2.5 meters to 10 meters
- protective film
52-3D8X12: 3D LCD Monitor, with the following specifications:
- size: 52"
- resolution: 1920x1080
- true color representation
- intelligent display because it integrates inside the 3D interface and processing
- 3D viewing angle: about 120°
- 3D visualization distance: from 2.5 meters to 10 meters
- protective film
22-3D2N14: 3D LCD Monitor, with the following specifications:
- size: 22"
- resolution 1680x1050
- true color representation
- 3D viewing angle: about 140°
- 3D visualization distance: from 0.6 meters to 3 meters
- protective film
- touch screen as option
- double version: open frame or desktop (frame mount kit with accessories and desktop)
WZ33-3SO12: 3D 3x3 Videowall,
whose dimensions are 132" (diagonal) and 299x256x30 cm (WxHxD) since it is composed of 9 42" monitor model 42-3D6W02 with support
from the earth in a highly rigid aluminum front and aesthetically clean because all the hardware is placed behind the screen.
And the following software for the creation and display of 3D contents:
Finally by Bluebox (model product BLBX-3S022), a
service offered by Philips that allows the conversion of real-time content in 3D
format WOWvx 2D-plus-Depth through the use of two software:
- WOWvx Spacer
- WOWvx Compositor
Fields of application for this revolutionary technology ranges from retail (promotional and advertising) to entertainment (museums, casinos and videogames,…), but can also interest medical and educational fields.
Riassumendo...

We can summarize the
WOWvx Philips's technology as follows:
- Immediate grabs from the viewer;
- autostereoscopic display;
- no need for polarized glasses;
- multiple users experience 3D at the same time;
- large 3D viewing zone;
- multi-view lenticular technology;
- piena luminosità e contrasto;
- true color representation;
- modalità 3D e 2D di qualità eccellente;
- 2D high definition video playback;
- autosensing between 2D and 3D mode;
- integrated intelligent signal processing;
- flexible 3D data format through 2D-plus-Depth;
- 3D application performance and distribution bandwith close to 2D;
- optional plug-ins for popular 3D animation software available (3dsmax);
- 2D to 3D semi-automated stereoscopic conversion
To have a high 3D experience when you watch a WOWvx 3D Philips, minimum hardware requirements are necessary for the video playback from a pc:
- Windows© XP
- Dual core P4 3.0ghz or better
- 1 GB ram or better
- Nvidia Geforce 7600 or better
- Screen requires a single DVI-D signal, 1920x1080
